· Knute "Skip" Berger, Editor-in-Chief of Seattle Weekly, has announced the appointment of Michelangelo Matos as Music Editor. He will be reporting to the Weekly's Arts & Culture editor, Mark. D. Fefer. Matos is returning to Seattle Weekly, where he had previously served as Music Calendar Editor between 1999 and 2001. Since leaving the paper, Matos has been living in New York City and writing for the Village Voice and Rolling Stone among other publications.

· InfoWorld Media Group, which provides news, analysis, and strategic insight to IT decision-makers, has appointed veteran technology journalist Steve Fox as editor-in-chief. As editor-in-chief, Fox's responsibilities include day-to-day management and leadership of all editorial content for InfoWorld magazine and infoworld.com. Prior to the appointment, Fox served as an editorial consultant helping to accomplish InfoWorld's transition from tabloid to magazine format in April.

· The board of directors of Rand McNally & Company announced that Robert S. Apatoff has been appointed president and chief executive officer of the company, which provides mapping, navigation and travel tools. Apatoff was most recently Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Allstate, a publicly traded insurance company.

· Marvel Enterprises, Inc. has announced the appointment of F. Peter Cuneo, 59, as Vice Chairman of its Board of Directors. Mr. Cuneo has served as a director of the Company since July 1999 and served as Marvel's President and Chief Executive Officer from July 1999 until December 2002. Since retiring from the positions of President and CEO effective December 31, 2002, Mr. Cuneo has also served Marvel as Special Advisor to the CEO and has played a very active role in the Company's investor relations efforts. Isaac Perlmutter also continues to serve as Vice Chairman of the Board. Prior to Marvel, Mr. Cuneo's executive experience included serving as President, Chief Executive Officer and as a director of Remington Products Company, L.L.C., a manufacturer and marketer of personal care appliances. Mr. Cuneo is also currently a director of Water Pik Technologies, Inc.

· Cristina Aby-Azar has been named managing editor of The Wall Street Journal Americas, an international business-news section published by Dow Jones & Company for partner newspapers throughout Latin America. Ms. Aby-Azar, formerly deputy managing editor of the Journal Americas, succeeds Edward Schumacher, who is leaving Dow Jones after nine years to become chief executive and editorial director of Meximerica Media, a new company with plans to publish Spanish-language daily newspapers in Texas and elsewhere. In her new role, Ms. Aby-Azar will be responsible for the news operations of the Journal Americas, which appears in 18 newspapers in 16 countries with total circulation of 1.7 million. The Journal Americas, published in Spanish and Portuguese, includes news from The Wall Street Journal and its international editions, adapted and edited for Latin America. Ms. Aby-Azar joined the Journal Americas in 1997 to launch the Portuguese-language edition. Prior to joining Dow Jones, she worked for 10 years for Gazeta Mercantil, the leading business newspaper in Brazil.

· Librarian of Congress James H. Billington announced that he has selected Deanna B. Marcum as associate librarian for Library Services, effective Aug. 11. Marcum served as director of Public Service and Collection Management at the Library of Congress from 1993-95. In 1995, she was appointed president of the Council on Library Resources and president of the Commission on Preservation and Access. She oversaw the merger of these two organizations into the Council on Library and Information Resources in 1997 and has served as its president since that time. From 1989-92, she was dean of the School of Library and Information Science at The Catholic University of America and vice-president of the Council on Library Resources from 1981-89. Marcum is the author of several books and reports, including Development of Digital Libraries: An American Perspective (as editor and contributing author), "Good Books in a Country Home: The Public Library as Cultural Force in Hagerstown, Maryland, 1878-1920" and "Online Acquisitions for Libraries", published in Library Technology Reports.

Digital Publishing

· Handmark, Inc., a publisher of retail software for Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld devices, has acquired the online ebook reseller pdaBookstore.com. The pdaBookstore.com website will continue to operate as an independent business until later this year when it will be integrated into the MemoWare.com destination also owned by Handmark. MemoWare.com is the an online library of free content for PDAs. The pdaBookstore.com website will become the ecommerce site within MemoWare for content that is offered for sale.

Content Deals

· Ziff Davis Media, a media company focused on the technology and videogames markets, announced that it will supply Yahoo! News' Technology Section with news stories and commentary every day its online and print business technology brands -- PC Magazine, eWEEK, Baseline, CIO Insight, ExtremeTech.com and Microsoft Ziff Davis will also provide content to Yahoo!'s new weekly Tech Tuesday feature. A feature article will be written by Jim Louderback, editor-in-chief of Ziff Davis Internet and one America's foremost leading technology journalists.

· The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania announced that Knowledge@Wharton, the online business analysis and research journal of the Wharton School, and Economist.com have entered a partnership to launch a series of Web-based briefings on current business topics. The seminars will be accessible from both the Economist.com and Knowledge@Wharton websites. These online events will reside in a new section of both websites to be called The Global Business Report.

Launches and Redesigns

· The Ashley Group, a division of Reed Business Information and the creators of Luxury Homes magazine, announced it will launch quarterly editions in key regions around the country by the end of the year. The four new Luxury Homes magazines will give consumers more extensive examples of high-end homes that convey the flavor and distinctiveness of their regions, said Greg Samios, Executive Vice President and General Manager of The Ashley Group. The four regional editions: Northeast, Southeast, Midwest and Southwest, will be available on newsstands by the end of this year. This latest move by The Ashley Group follows the introduction of its magazine called The Best of the Best of Luxury Homes, which featured the top winners of housing design by the Design Excellence Award Show.

· McGraw-Hill Education announced it will combine the operations of SRA/McGraw-Hill, Wright Group/McGraw-Hill and McGraw-Hill/Contemporary in one organization which will be named McGraw-Hill Learning Group, effective July 1. The new group will consist of two divisions: SRA/McGraw-Hill and Wright Group/McGraw-Hill.

· MedicineNet, Inc., an online healthcare publishing company, has announced its online encyclopedic medical dictionary that covers all aspects of medicine. Unlike other online medical websites, the MedicineNet.com online dictionary is uniquely 100% written and edited by its network of 70+ U.S. board-certified physicians. The resource is continuously being updated with the latest contemporary medical articles, facts, news, terms, including doctor’s views on the latest medical news and topics.

· AltaVista has expanded its multimedia index catalogs. The catalogs now include over 540 million image files and approximately 11 million video and audio files, including popular formats such as MP3 and MPEG. Included in the index are hundreds of millions of files published in countries around the world. Additionally, AltaVista added a new refinement feature to its image index that enables consumers to customize searches by dimension.
