Distinction Magazine Launches in Los Angeles in September

Posted on July 11, 2003

Distinction magazine, a new luxury magazine showcasing the world of affluent and socially minded Angelenos, will launch its premier issue in September. Distinction is published by Angeles Publications, a division of Los Angeles Times Communications, LLC. The bi-monthly magazine is a separate and independently written and edited publication from the Los Angeles Times newspaper.

Angeles Publications is a new division that has been established to develop publications that are targeted to specific markets. Angeles Publications will report to the advertising marketing division of the Los Angeles Times.

The magazine will provide articles and photographs by some of L.A.'s best writers and photographers. Its contemporary design will be driven by large photo layouts. In late August, the magazine will be mailed directly to about 50,000 affluent households and an additional 5,000 copies will be sold at select newsstands and distributed to upscale retail locations, spas, hotels and cultural events.

"Distinction is the most exciting new luxury magazine for and about L.A.'s affluent and influential with a smart twist," said Jane Kahn, publisher. "We will go inside the world of L.A. society that is not about Hollywood celebrities and focus on the business and cultural leaders, philanthropists and creative visionaries who have built Los Angeles into a vibrant, world-class city."

Publisher Jane Kahn has had many years of experience in luxury and lifestyle publications. She spent seven years at Hearst Magazines as West Coast Director of Town & Country and Harper's Bazaar. She also has been Los Angeles manager for the Conde Nast magazine Vogue and recently was a consultant for Richard Riordan's Los Angeles Examiner.

Editor Laurie Pike said, "Our editorial vision is to capture the soul rather than the glitz of Los Angeles. Every issue will look inside the lives and homes of powerful, interesting people. We'll cover all aspects of this lifestyle, from fashion and design to society and philanthropy, local culture and the arts."

Editor Laurie Pike served as editor-in-chief and publisher of Glue magazine, a Los Angeles style and arts magazine, from 1998 to 2001. Prior to that, she was West Coast editor of the website Fashion Wire Daily and the magazines Sportswear International and Jalouse. Pike also served as fashion editor for Movieline magazine, and has written articles for GQ, British Vogue, Los Angeles magazine, the Los Angeles Times and LA Weekly.

Creative Director Joseph Shuldiner has been involved in the field of publication design for over 20 years. He has worked for Shape, Home and Los Angeles Times Magazine. Most recently, he was art director of the Los Angeles Times special advertising sections.
