Tribune Invests in NYC Tabloid Newspaper

Posted on October 17, 2003

Tribune Publishing announced that it is investing in amNewYork, a new daily newspaper in New York City that will target young, urban commuters. The free publication will be available Monday through Friday beginning in the fourth quarter of 2003.

"New York is a great newspaper city. The size and demographics of the commuter market make this an attractive investment," said Jack Fuller, Tribune Publishing president. "It is an exciting addition to our New York portfolio, which includes not only Newsday and WPIX-TV (WB11), but also Hoy, New York's largest Spanish-language daily, our southern Connecticut dailies Greenwich Time and The Advocate, and Distinction magazine."

The amNewYork management team is led by Russel Pergament, who will be the publisher of the new tabloid. He is a veteran advertising executive who brings more than 30 years experience in publishing. He was a founding partner of TAB weekly newspapers that service the greater Boston metropolitan area and the founding publisher of Boston Metro.

"Tribune is a great partner with well-established media properties in the New York metropolitan area," said Pergament. "With our commitment to urban commuters, we plan to provide news and information relevant to young readers' everyday lives and create a targeted advertising alternative for marketers."
