Life magazine is being reintroduced to more than 12 million readers
nationwide through distribution
in over 70 newspapers.
The magazine was first published by Time Inc. as a weekly in 1936. It ceased
publication in 1972, but returned as a monthly, 1978 -- 2000. Life is best known
for its iconic red-and-white logo and dramatic photography. The magazine
has been updated to reflect a
contemporary feel and will continue as a newspaper insert featuring
stories, photographs and tips and ideas for the weekend.
Life's October 1 debut issue features Sarah Jessica Parker as its cover story. Parker reveals that she'll be working on four new movies and talks about motherhood, marriage, and life after Sex and the City. Other stories include a feature by Pulitzer-prize winning author Frank McCourt about three immigrant families arriving in the United States for the first time; a 13-year-old surfer who survived a shark attack; a look inside the halls of the Supreme Court. Life content will also include financial and lifestyle advice, recipes and entertainment reviews. "We wanted to create a magazine that people would feel as well as read," said managing editor Bill Shapiro. "Life is designed to help people connect: from the images that capture a world of emotions, to tips and ideas to help people make the time they spend with friends and family more special." Life will arrive in Friday editions of over 70 newspapers nationwide, with a total circulation of 12 million. Distributing newspapers include, among others, the Tribune Company's newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Newsday and The Baltimore Sun; Knight Ridder's papers, including the Philadelphia Inquirer, Miami Herald and the San Jose Mercury News; the McClatchy Company papers, including the Sacramento Bee and the Star Tribune of Minneapolis. In the New York metropolitan area, Life will be distributed in the New York Daily News, Newsday, The Record (Bergen County, New Jersey), Herald News, The Stamford Advocate, and Greenwich Time. Additional newspapers also include, among others, the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News and St. Petersburg Times.
