Yoga Journal Test Launches New Lifestyle Magazine

Posted on October 29, 2004

Yoga Journal has test launched Yoga Journal's Balanced Living. It debuted on newsstands October 5, 2004, and will remain on sale until the end of this year. Subscribers to Yoga Journal, which is published seven times a year, received this special issue as one of their seven issues. The second issue of Yoga Journal's Balanced Living is scheduled to appear on newsstands in the fall of 2005. It will have a cover price of $4.99 and a paid circulation of 310,000.

Yoga Journal's Balanced Living is a lifestyle magazine devoted to helping readers create happier, healthier, more balanced lives. It will cover subjects ranging from family and home, to work and relationships, to physical and emotional health. Included in the premiere issue are a feature on the home of raw-food chef Roxanne Klein in Northern California, an article on how to do "nothing" well, and a feature on how to use the science of Ayurveda to determine your stress type.

"We've been interested in creating a lifestyle magazine for several years," said Kathryn Arnold, editorial director of Yoga Journal. "Readers have told us that finding balance in all aspects of their lives is their No. 1 goal. Yoga Journal's Balanced Living is for those who want sound, real-life solutions on how to live healthfully in a stressful world."

The concept for the issue grew out of a 2003 survey by Harris Interactive Service Bureau (HISB) on behalf of Yoga Journal; it found that stress is the No. 1 health concern among U.S. adults and one of the primary reasons people seek out yoga. Of the current 15 million people who practice yoga, 93% say yoga has helped them better balance their lives. Yoga Journal's Balanced Living will incorporate some yoga, but the content will be broader.

Yoga Journal is the largest-circulation yoga magazine in the country. Founded in 1975, it has tripled its paid circulation in the past few years, to 310,000 and more than 1,000,000 readers bimonthly. The magazine is published by Yoga Journal, LLC, based in Berkeley, California.
