Kingfisher and New York Times to Publish Children's Books

Kingfisher Publications, a Houghton Mifflin Company imprint, and the New York Times have announced an agreement to publish a line of nonfiction books for young readers. The books will be for children ages ten to fourteen. Launching early 2006, the line will consist of four books a year with two books published each spring and fall season. With the new book series, Kingfisher's list, which has centered on books for children in preschool through sixth grade, will now have a broader reach to the middle school grades and beyond. The subjects of the books are still to be determined, but they will cover a number of different areas, including current affairs, science, technology, culture, sports, design and food.

"We have learned from our educational colleagues at Houghton Mifflin of the great role nonfiction is now playing in the classroom," said Nancy Grant, Vice President, Managing Director of Kingfisher. "I am particularly excited about working with The Times on a children's list of books. Who better to tell the stories of our recent past, our heroes, and our discoveries than the newspaper heralded for the breadth, depth and quality of its journalism."

Alex Ward, editorial director of book development at The Times, said, "We recognize the importance of fostering among young people a curiosity about the world, and one way to achieve that is by bringing the talent and experience of our great reporting staff, as well as the depth of our photographic and written archives, to a line of children's books."

Kingfisher Publications is a Houghton Mifflin Company imprint. It is located in Boston and London and specializes in highly illustrated nonfiction and reference books for children of all ages. Houghton Mifflin publishes textbooks, instructional technology, assessments and other educational materials for elementary and secondary schools and colleges. The company also publishes an extensive line of reference works and fiction and nonfiction for adults and young readers.
