Community Media, LLC Launches NYCPlus

Friday, April 22, 2005

Community Media, LLC has announced NYCPlus, a tabloid-sized news magazine targeting New York City's fastest growing population -- men and women aged 50 and up. NYCPlus focuses on lifestyle, culture, humor, art, finance, housing, health, social and political issues, as well as many unique perspectives on the process of growing older in The Big Apple. NYCPlus will be published twelve times a year and is being distributed throughout all five boroughs in senior centers, health establishments, newsstands, and other high traffic locations. It is also available by subscription.

"NYCPlus is a powerful, stylish platform for advertisers to showcase their products and services targeted to the 50-plus crowd, and will add to the long- running success of our great newspaper group," said John W. Sutter, publisher of three weekly newspapers: The Villager, Downtown Express, and Gay City News. "A great many 50-plusers in the New York area are avid readers who know and love good writing, which is the bedrock of this publication."

The first NYCPlus cover story is a profile of cartoonist/playwright/author Jules Feiffer, by veteran journalist, critic, and founding father of The Village Voice, Jerry Tallmer. Other features include: an essay entitled "Even Smart Women Hate Losing Their Youthful Looks," by journalist and author, Vivian Gornick; commentary by senior advocate Arthur Webb and humor by Kent Doyle; and much more.

"We want to surprise and inspire our readers every single month with stellar collections of stories across a variety of genres," said editor, Jennie Green. "Anybody can lecture readers about the pros and cons of bunion surgery. Through the voices, experiences, and original reporting of our contributors, we want to cultivate literary and graphic content that is as smart, sexy, and sophisticated as our readers themselves."

In addition to its three weekly New York newspapers, Community Media also publishes community handbooks,. In 2001 The Villager was named best weekly newspaper in New York State by the NYPA.
