Conde Nast to Launch Teen Vogue in Spring 2003

Posted on June 7, 2002

Teen Vogue will be launched in 2003 beginning with a February/March issue, it was announced by Steven T. Florio, President and CEO of Conde Nast Publications, Inc. The magazine has published four test issues since 2000 and will publish six new Euro-size issues in 2003. It will launch with a circulation rate base of 450,000.

"The overwhelmingly positive response from readers to the four test issues of Teen Vogue has convinced us that there is a place in the market for a sophisticated teen magazine," Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, said. "I think of the Teen Vogue reader as a young version of the Vogue reader: someone who demands authoritative and practical fashion and beauty coverage, with a wide range of interests to be met. I'm pleased to say these girls appear to be out there. I have been delighted with the direction Amy has taken the magazine so far. Amy is a great interpreter of the magazine's sensibility. There is no question she'll do an amazing job with Teen Vogue."

Amy Astley, currently Beauty Director of Vogue, will be the editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue. Ms. Astley was named to edit Teen Vogue by Anna Wintour, who will be the editorial director of the new magazine. Ms. Astley was the editor of the four test issues. Gina Sanders, currently Vice President and Publisher of Gourmet, was named Vice President and Publisher of Teen Vogue by Mr. Florio. Both appointments are effective immediately.

Teen Vogue will be produced in the new Euro magazine size (6&3/4" by 9"). It will feature many of the same photographers who shoot regularly for Vogue, but it will be tailored to sophisticated teen sensibilities. Articles will address the full range of teenage interests, from celebrities, movies, music, and shopping to peer pressure, body image, and self-identity. Teen Vogue will also feature current fashion items.

Ms. Sanders became Publisher of Gourmet in 1997 and Vice President and Publisher in June, 2000. Ms. Sanders came to Gourmet from Details, where she was Publisher from 1994 to 1997. She originally joined Conde Nast as an Account Manager at House & Garden in 1988. Ms. Astley originally joined Vogue in 1993 and became Beauty Director the following year. She has also written for the magazine. Before she joined Vogue, Ms. Astley was an Associate Editor at HG for four years.
