  • AOL Time Warner is ceasing publication of three magazine. December will be the last issues for Family Life and On. Asiaweek will also cease publication. Source: AdAge.com, L.A. Times, New York Times 11-30-01

  • ABC may not bring back the Millionaire game show, which is not as popular this year, for its Fall lineup. Source: Media Life Magazine 11-30-01

  • The San Francisco Chronicle is laying off 220 employees, about 9% of its workforce. A drop in ad revenue of 20% this year was blamed for the job cuts. Source: The New York Times 11-28-01

  • Terra Lycos, the operator of the Lycos.com search portal, is forcing its US employees to take a mandatory holiday. Employees can take the days as vacation time or as unpaid days. Source: CNET, Internet.com 11-28-01

  • Questia Media, an online library of books and journals, has cut 68 jobs, about 50% of its workforce. This round of layoffs follows a reduction of 140 employees in May, 2001. Source: Houston Chronicle, Publishers Weekly 11-26-01

  • Montreal based Cinar Corp., a children's television producer, has laid off 54 employees. Source: L.A. Times 11-26-01

  • Palm, a developer of handheld computers and ebook distributor, is planning as many as 400 job cuts. Source: CNET 11-23-01

  • ITN, a U.K. independent news producer, has cut 133 jobs. Source: BBC, Guardian 11-23-01

  • Fashionmall.com, which bills itself as "fashion's most powerful click," reported that it now has just three employees. The "most powerful" fashion website also has plans to lay off two more employees before the end of the year -- leaving it with only one, lonely worker. Source: MarketWatch.com 11-23-01

  • Job Cuts at Publishing Houses; Book Sales Slow
    49 positions have been cut at Penguin UK, 23 of them at Dorling Kindersley which Penguin recently acquired. Harper Collins is also expected to announce job cuts. Meanwhile, the New York Times reported that book sales by major publishers have slowed by 15% since last year and some publishers reported that sales from bestsellers are down a striking 25-40%.   • Surfers Not Interested in Paying For Content
    Adding insult to injury to dot-coms that have gone out of business users are having little trouble substituting new websites for their favorite sites that closed down. The survey also found that most users are reluctant to pay for content at websites and prefer to simply switch to a non-fee website -- only 12% said they would consider paying for content.   • La Martiniere Group, the parent company of Harry Abrams, a publisher that specializes in illustrated artbooks, is eliminating 25 employees. Source: Publishers Weekly 11-19-01

  • Following 1,400 job cuts in June, Tribune Company is implementing salary cuts and freezes. Source: The Write News 11-16-01

  • Red Herring, a technology media company, has continued its streak of staff reductions. In this round the company cut 27% of its workforce, about 38 employees. Red Herring has had several rounds of layoffs this year. Source: CNET 11-16-01

  • TechTV, a technology news cable network, has fired 130 employees, about 25% of its total workforce. Source: Wired 11-16-01

  • Yahoo has confirmed its second round of layoffs this year. 400 jobs were cut in this round, about 12% of Yahoo's total workforce. Yahoo employs about 3,000 people. Source: Newsbytes, Business 2.0, CNET, MediaWeek 11-16-01

  • AOL Time Warner might make additional restructing job cuts in the 4th quarter according to its public filings. The company has already cut jobs across its divisions this year. Source: Newsbytes, CNET 11-16-01

  • iVillage.com has reducted its workforce by approximately 18% or 50 employees. The layoffs follow cuts of nearly half of its staff after its merger with Women.com earlier this year. 11-16-01

  • Zoland Books, an independent publisher based in Cambridge, is closing its doors. Zoland was launched in 1987 and published fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and art books. Source: Boston Globe 11-16-01

  • IPC Media, the UK magazine publisher recently purchased by AOL Time Warner, is ceasing publication of six magazine titles. The ceased publications include Woman's Journal, Your Garden, Homes & Ideas, Your Life, Marie Claire Health & Beauty and the Complete Guide to Pregnancy. 115 jobs were also cut from IPC's exhibitions business.   • Yahoo is expected to announce a second round of layoffs later this week. Earlier this year Yahoo cut 425 jobs. This round could be as much as 15% of Yahoo's workforce or 385 jobs. Source: TechTV.com 11-12-01

  • Boston based Tuttle Publishing has laid off 12 employees. Source: PublishersWeekly 11-12-01

  • The Academy of American Poets has laid off half of its staff -- 8 out of 17 employees. The company will also sublease some of its office space. Source: New York Times 11-12-01

  • The World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc. has announced a restructuring plan and the resignation of Stuart Snyder, President and COO. The company's Internet and magazine publishing operations will be merged under Shane McMahon, President, New Media. The reorganization resulted in a reduction of approximately 9 percent of the company's work force. 11-12-01

  • More information has emerged about Random House's plans to phase out its AtRandom ebook imprint. The company is still dropping the AtRandom imprint, but will continue to publishing ebook versions of some of its hardcover and paperback books. Source: New York Times, CNN, USAToday.com 11-12-01

  • Fortune Small Business has cut 14 employees in a restructing move that merges FSB's marketing staff with the staff at the Fortune Group. Source: MediaWeek 11-12-01

  • Shares of Barnes & Noble lost more than 1/3 of its value Thursday after the company announced it would suffer diminished revenues primarily because of the terrorist attacks and terrorism warnings. Borders Group did not make an announcement but its stock also fell by 10%. Source: CBS Marketwatch 11-9-01

  • CondeNet has cut 25 positions, over 20% of its workforce. CondeNet is the Internet division of Conde Nast's magazines and includes the Epicurious.com, Conierge.com and Style.com websites. Source: CNET 11-8-01

  • Disney has cut 125 staff from its Walt Disney Internet Group (WDIG). 25 of the cuts were from ABCNews.com. Source: CNET 11-8-01

  • BusinessWeek has cut 39 of its staff, including 15 from its online division. Source: New York Post 11-8-01

  • Random House is phasing out its AtRandom ebook imprint. Random House introduced the imprint in July, 2000. Source: Publishers Weekly 11-8-01

  • Engage, a technology company which operated Engage Media Network, a defunct advertising network which ran online ads for over 1,000 publishers, is offering to pay the publishers only 60% of what it owes them. Some of the publishers being offered less than what they are owed include Motortrend.com and Gorp.com. Source: CNET 11-8-01

  • CMP Information, the UK headquartered division of the Professional Media arm of United Business Media plc, has initiated a consultation process with its workforce to discuss proposed cost reductions of around 200 staff. CMP Information is a UK headquartered magazine and events business, with operations also based in the USA and Europe. 11-8-01

  • Ziff Davis Media has cut 11% of its staff, about 75 positions. Smart Partner magazine will cease publishing. Interactive Week will also stop publishing and will become a section of eWeek magazine. Source: The Write News, New York Times, MediaWeek 11-5-01

  • Entertainment website MrShowbiz.com has closed down. After a short fairwell message visitors to Mr. Showbiz are transfered to the entertainment section of ABCNews.com. 11-5-01

  • National Magazines is to closing Focus, a U.K. science magazine. National Magazines purchased the publication from Gruner + Jahr last year. Source: MediaGuardian 11-5-01

  • GE Magazines has closed the U.K. magazines Garden Inspirations and Inspirations for Your Home. 33 employees worked for the publications. Source: MediaGuardian 11-5-01

  • The Daily Telegraph is folding Dotcom Telegraph, its special Internet technology pullout. Technology coverage will now be located in the business section of the newspaper. Source: MediaGuardian 11-5-01

  • Smaller Staffs at Print Magazines
    The number of employees at print magazines is expected to diminish over the next several years according to industry experts. Rising print costs, rising postage costs, diminished advertising sales and competition from the Internet are just a few of the hurdles the print magazine industry is facing. Time Inc. editor in chief Norman Pearlstine said that big magazines published by Time, Inc. such as Time and Sports Illustrated could see staff cuts of 50% by 2010.   • Book and magazine publisher Rodale, Inc. is ceasing publication of MH-18, a teen magazine for boys. Recently the company cut 148 employees in its book publishing division. Source: New York Post 11-1-01

  • Reciprocal, Inc., a provider of digital rights management and distribution services, has closed its doors. In September, 2001 the company cut 65% of its workforce. Now, the company has shut its doors for good. 11-1-01

  • The Dallas Morning News has fired 73 employees -- including 17 newsroom employees. Source: The Observer 11-1-01

  • The Spokesman-Review is letting 20 employees go. This is a second round of layoffs. In July, 2001 the company also laid off 20 employees. Source: MediaWeek 11-1-01

  • Adobe, the ebook reader and publishing software provider, has announced job cuts. The company is cutting 150 jobs, about 5% of its total workforce. Source: SFGate.com 11-1-01

  • The BBC is laying off 129 people from its Factual and Learning division which creates documentary films. Source: BBC, Financial Times 11-1-01
