- Terra Lycos,
the Spanish media company which owns Lycos.com, Tripod.com and
Wired.com, has laid off 174 U.S. workers -- 21% of its total U.S.
workforce.

Adobe Acrobat, is cutting 260 jobs.

- A sophisticated attack on the Internet has been called the largest
ever. However, little web traffic was disrupted by the

- Time Inc. is ceasing publication of Sports Illustrated Women with
the December issue.

- Gruner & Jahr USA Cuts Rosie Staff
Gruner & Jahr USA is cutting about 120 jobs --- most of the
staff from Rosie magazine. The magazine ceased publishing after
editorial disputes between Rosie O'Donnell and G&J. The December issue
will be Rosie's last issue.

- Q&A Website Closes
Askme.com, a website that allows people to post question and answers
about any subject, will be completely shut down by the
end of day on November 25, 2002. AskMe Corp., the operator of the
website, will stay in business, but will focus on corporate customers.

- Variety reported that Showtime Networks has cut
25 employees from its New York and Los Angeles offices.

- Washington Techway Ceases Publication
PostNewsweek Tech Media announced that it was expanding
its media investments in the government sector and discontinuing
publication of Washington Techway magazine.
Chuck Lyons, chief executive officer of PostNewsweek Tech
Media, which is a business unit of The Washington Post
Company, said the organization will be restructured to focus
exclusively on the business-to-government marketplace.

- MSNBC has cut eight editorial jobs, leaving the company with
a total of 170 employees.

- Interest in Print Fades as Web Grows
Print magazines and newspapers may be headed for
extinction. A study by GartnerG2 has found that interest
in offline activities such as magazines,
newspapers, television and movies continues to drop
as people turn to the Internet for information and entertainment.

- Vivendi Universal is firing nearly 152 employees
from its Paris headquarters, about half the number of people
who work there. About 200 job cuts will also be made at Vivendi's
New York office.

- AOL has been
accused of over billing in a new lawsuit that
could become a class action lawsuit. The ex-AOL customers
complain that AOL continued to charge them for several months
after they tried to cancel their AOL accounts. Customers
have also complained that AOL did not offer a refund for
these extra charges. AOL is also currently
under investigation by the SEC for accounting
irregularities.

- National Public Radio (NPR) has laid off 9 employees
from its staff of 700.

- Consumers hate spam and they also think most or
all marketing messages are also spam. Advertisers and
marketers face growing resistance to their
permission-based marketing emails. Many customers treat
them the same way they treat spam. Customers
often block, delete and ignore these types of emails.

- Crown Media, which operates and distributes the
Hallmark Channel,
is cutting 130 jobs as part of a corporate restructuring. 10-8-02
- Red Herring, the publisher of the technology magazine
by the same name, is being restructured.
Red Herring's staff has dropped from over
400 to under 50 since the technology crash.

- Upside magazine is ceasing publication with its
October issue. The upside.com website has published no new
articles since 10-7-02. Upside, which is published by Ulmac, Inc.,
employs about 75 people.

- AOL Time Warner is ceasing publication of Mutual
Fund Magazine, a personal finance magazine. The November
issue will be its last. Over 30 people worked for the publication.

- Bertelsmann Admits Nazi Past
Bertelsmann has admitted to publishing
anti-Semitic materials and using Jewish
slave labor. Bertelsmann previously denied
its association with the Nazi party.
Fortunately, the company has moved far away from
this ugly part of its history. A company
spokesperson told the BBC that, "the values of
Bertelsmann then are irreconcilable with the
company today."

- Weak Sales of 9-11 Books Curtail Publisher Profits
Too many 9-11 books were published and these books
are not selling well -- with the exception of a few titles
such as Lisa Beamer's Let's Roll!.
Publishers moved some regular books aside to make room for
the books covering September 11th.
The weak results will lower book sales in September
and October and could also impact total Christmas holiday sales.

- Forbes ASAP Ceases Publication
Forbes is ceasing
publication of Forbes ASAP, a business
technology magazine it launched in 1992.
Eight employees were laid off as a result
of the closure.

- Village Voice Media has closed the Cleveland
Free Times and New Times Corp. has ceased
publishing of the New Times Los Angeles. The
two alternative publishers competed with each
other in these cities. The New York Post reported
that 160 employees were let go as a result of the closures.

- A Penny For Salon
Shares of the Salon
Media Group (SALNC) closed at 1 cent on Friday.
At its peak in July, 1999 Salon traded at
$14.25 per share.

- The number of family-owned newspapers is shrinking
and more family-owned publishers are currently
under pressure to sell. Editor & Publisher
reports that the number of family-owned
daily newspapers has dropped from 350 to 250 since 1990

- Wired Cancels Epublishing Column
Wired is ending its epublishing industry column from
novelist and epublishing expert M.J. Rose. In an editor's
note, Wired said that it is ending the column because
there is less news in epublishing than there used to be.
However, there are several epublishing-only news sources
online that would likely argue with that claim.
