  • Ted Turner To Leave AOL
    Ted Turner has decided to leave AOL Time Warner in May to pursue his philanthropic interests and possibly buy back the Atlanta Braves. Turner's departure follows the resignation of Steve Case as Chairman and an enormous $98.7 billion loss reported by AOL Time Warner in 2002. Source: The Write News 1-31-03

  • F&W Publications Folds Ebay Newsletter
    eBay Magazine, which was published by Krause Publications, was terminated in 2001. Now Krause (which is now owned by F&W Publications) has also ceased publishing its SuperSeller Newsletter, which was targeted towards eBay users.   • Newspaper Ad Revenues Down in 2002
    The value of print continues to slowly erode away.... Newspaper ad revenues declined 0.6 percent in 2002 versus 2001 -- the first newspaper ad revenue decline since 1991. In the meantime, online ad revenues increased over 40% for the year. Source: The Write News 1-31-03

  • War = Less Profits for News Providers
    It is already a bad environment for news providers and it could get even worse in a war. War coverage is expensive for news providers and advertisers tend to not want to advertise -- a double negative.   • You've Got Staggering Losses!
    AOL Time Warner has posted a staggering $98.7 billion loss for 2002. It was the biggest annual loss ever for a U.S. company. Source: Washington Post 1-31-03

  • Harcourt Education is cutting 350 jobs, about 12% of its workforce of 3,000 employees. Source: Publishers Weekly 1-31-03

  • Public Sector Media is ceasing publication of The Federal Paper, which provides coverage of the executive branch of the government. The publications was launched just four months ago. Source: American City Business Journals 1-28-03

  • Holt Rinehart and Winston Inc., an Austin, Texas based education publisher, has laid off 85 employees, about 11% of its workforce. Source: American City Business Journals 1-27-03

  • Reality TV = Less Jobs for Hollywood Writers
    Reality TV shows are so popular that Hollywood executives are rewriting future programming schedules. The new schedules include much less traditional television shows, thereby reducing the number of available jobs for screenwriters and actors. Source: New York Times, WWForums.com 1-25-03

  • No Surprise: Salon Still Struggling
    Salon.com is still in business despite continual layoffs, financial difficulties and a high burn-rate. The company has 50 employees, down from its peak of 175 in 2000. Source: L.A. Times 1-21-03

  • Gator Preys on Search Engines
    Gator.com has a new target for its despised pop-up and pop-under ads. It is now attempting to steal keyword ads from search engines like Google.com. The new pop-under called Search Scout appears when people who have the Gator.com software (which can be installed unintentionally through scumware) attempt a Google or Yahoo search. Search Scout then displays new search results from competiting search providers. Gator was criticized and sued last year by major web publishers for software that placed pop-ups over their banner ads. Source: News.com 1-17-03

  • Think Your Hard Drive is Clean? Think Again.
    A recent study found that many people think simply erasing files from the hard drive they are about to discard or sell will destroy it. This is not true. In fact, even re-formatting the disk itself will not completely erase the data. New Scientist reported that two graduate students who purchased used hard drives over the Internet were able to recover valuable personal and financial information on the drives.   • More Layoffs at CNET
    CNET Networks is cutting 80 more jobs. Over the past two years the company has terminated 750 positions, over 30% of its workforce. Source: SFGate.com 1-14-03

  • Reuters plans to cut 1,000 more jobs early this year. Reuters has cut over 2,000 jobs (10% of its workforce) since the middle of 2001 because of the slow economy. Source: Reuters 1-11-03

  • Bloomberg Personal Finance is ceasing publication; the february 2003 issue will be the last. Source: AdAge.com 1-10-03

  • Harcourt Education, which employs about 3,000 people, plans to cut hundreds of jobs. Harcourt will try to achieve some of the cuts through early retirement. Source: Miami.com 1-9-03

  • Book Sales Were Not Merry
    USA Today said sales of books on its bestsellers list were down 20% when 2002 is compared to last year's holiday season. Source: USA Today 1-8-03

  • The oldest U.S. gay bookstore is closing its doors. The 35 year old Oscar Wilde Bookshop will shut down by the end of the month. Several factors include 9/11, the economy and competition from big chains like Borders and Barnes & Noble hurt the small bookstore. Creative Visions is now the only gay bookstore left in New York City now has only one gay bookstore left, according to Gay.com/PlanetOut. Source: Gay.com/PlanetOut 1-7-03

  • CNN has laid off some of its top anchors and correspondents. Source: New York Daily News 1-3-03

  • While some analysts have been forecasting a slight come back in ad spending, Moody's does not agree. Instead, they predict that 2003 could be an ugly year. Source: Marketwatch.com 1-1-03
