  • Yolk, a pop culture magazine for Asian Americans, is ceasing publication after 10 years. Yolk was unable to make a profit during that time period. The magazine will not go away entirely. It is being relaunch as an online only magazine at chopblock.com. Source: L.A. Times 12-15-03

  • America Online has laid off 450 people working in its California offices. Source: News.com 12-9-03

  • Google's first search result for the keywords "miserable failure" is a link to the biography of George W. Bush on the whitehouse.gov website. A group of website owners caused Google to link the words to the president's biography by using a technique called Google bombing. Source: Newsday, BBC 12-7

  • Crain Ends Print Edition of Modern Physician
    Crain Communications is combining its two health publications Modern Healthcare and Modern Physician. The monthly print version of Modern Physician will be replaced by several electronic products, including an expanded website. Modern Physician's December 2003 print issue, will be the last print issue of the publication. 12-5-03

  • Music Downloads Could Lead to Demise of Albums
    The popularity of legal music downloads is growing and it is a trend that could lead to the demise of the album. When people buy music online they tend to purchase and download one song at a time. This consumer choice could threaten the album as an art form. Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple which recently launched iTunes, has already declared the album dead but many musicians are not yet ready to give up on albums. Source: USA Today, WWForums.com 12-4-03

  • ExIn LLC, the parent company of the San Francisco Examiner, has laid off another 13-14 employees and hired a new CEO. Source: SF Gate 12-3-03

  • Europeans now spend more than surfing than reading magazines, according to a recent study. Print magazines have been losing readers and subscribers because of the Internet and the weak economy. Source: Media Guardian 12-1-03

  • Disney Resigns and Blasts Eisner
    Roy E. Disney, the last Disney relative remaining at the entertainment company, has resigned. His resignation letter was extremely critical of CEO Michael Eisner and left no doubt that Roy Disney feels Eisner is no good for Walt Disney shareholders. Roy Disney's business partner Stanley Gold also resigned a day later and was critical of Michael Eisner. Source: USA Today 12-1-03

  • According to Reuters, Grace Magazine has lost the backing of its primary investor and will be ceasing publication. Grace, which launched in May, 2002, offered fashion, beauty and style information for plus-sized women. Source: Reuters/Miami Herald 12-1-03
