- EMI Cuts 1,500 Jobs
EMI announced it will cut 1,500 jobs and outsource CD production. The company
will also drop some of its smaller artists.

- YM, a popular teen magazine, is dropping its circulation base 25%
from 2 million to 1.5 million. Most teen magazines have newsstand
sales and circulation problems these days.

- Northeastern University will shut down its 27-year publishing
press in 2005. 9 employees will be let go. Northeastern published about
35 books per year.

- King County Journal Newspapers, publisher of the King County
Journal and suburban weeklies, is cutting 24 jobs. The company
is also selling its headquarters in Bellevue. King County Journal also
cut 19 jobs last August.

- Former USA Today reporter Jack Kelley apparently faked at least
eight stories during his career with the paper. Kelley resigned in
January.

- 70% Of Mags Have Declining Newsstand Sales
An AdAge.com article covering magazine industry woes indicates that
over 70% of print magazine have declining newsstand sales.
The article also offers solutions, but unfortunately for print magazines,
it continues to look more and more like the beginning of the end for
print publications. Avid readers have often found the information online
long before its turns up in a monthly print format.

jobs as part of a corporate restruction plan.

- Bookstore sales fell 1.2% in January.

- Traditional Media Popularity Fading
The popularity of newspapers, print magazines and cable and tv news
is dropping as people either tune out or switch to online sources.
Daily newspaper circulation is down 11% since 1990. Network evening
news ratings are down over 30% since 1993. And most newspapers and
radio and television newsrooms have since staff cuts recently.

- 2003 Music Sales Down
According to recent news reports, the music industry began to show some positive
signs of fiscal recovery beginning in 2003. The NPD Group, Inc. reports, however,
that teen consumers are not on the leading edge of this industry upturn.
Overall dollar sales of music CDs fell eight percent last year compared to 2002.

- Encyclopedias Become Dust Collectors
Hardcover encyclopedias are collecting dust and even digital
encyclopedic CDs and DVDs are being ignored. Instead, impatient students
are using search engines to conduct most of their research.

- POD Companies Lose Infringement Suit
Amazon.com, Ingram Industries and Lightning Source Inc. have lost
a patent infringement suit to On Demand Machine Corp. (ODMC) The cost of
print-on-demand printing could rise if POD printers
are required to purchase a license from ODMC. The companies plan
to appeal the court's decision.

- Fight Spam By Paying for Email?
Microsoft founder Bill Gates has come up with a plan to fight
spam by having people pay to send electronic email. However, the
idea has many skeptics.

- Michael Eisner has been dropped from his role as Chairman of
the Walt Disney Co. However, he remains CEO of the company. 43%
of shareholders opposed his reelection to the Board of Directors.

- Magazine publishers continue to suffer losses as newsstand sales drop
and advertising remains weak. The number of magazine titles dropped
over 9% in 2003.
