Pentagon Desires Good News From Iraq

According to the Christian Science Monitor the Pentagon is seeking "uplifting accounts" about the war in Iraq. Apparently the Pentagon is disappointed in the negative news from journalists in Iraq so it will be doing some of its own reporting. The Monitor reported that the Pentagon "has decided to send out Iraq Americans to bring what the Defense Department calls the 'good news' about the situation in Iraq to US military bases."

Layoffs at Belo

Belo Corp. is laying off 250 employees. According the Associated Press most of the cuts (about 150 positions) will take place at the Dallas Morning News. The job cuts follows a drop in circulation at the newspaper.

Dennis Publishing Layoffs

MediaWeek.com reports that Dennis Publishing has laid off about 12 editorial employees including Andy Pemberton, the editor in chief of Blender magazine.

Layoffs at LA.com

LA.com, a Los Angeles city guide, has cut over 100 editorial and circulation jobs according to LAVoice.org. LAVoice.org reported that layoffs included some top management jobs.

No Confidence in Media

According to a recent Gallup Poll most people no longer find the media reliable. Only 44% of Americans expressing confidence in the media?s ability to report news stories accurately and fairly. This is the lowest media confidence level since 1972 according to Gallup.

Viacom Fined for Wardrobe Malfunction

Viacom, the owner of CBS, has been fined by the FCC a maximum fee of $550,000 for Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction during this year's Super Bowl halftime show. CBS says it is looking at the possibility of an appeal.

G&J Cuts About 80 Jobs

AdAge.com via Crainsny.com is reporting that Gruner & Jahr USA has cut about 80 positions with Family Circle and YM being the hardest hit by the layoffs. AdAge also reported that their is ongoing speculation about the future of YM which has continued to lose advertising pages.

No More Hope

The bimonthly Hope magazine is planning to cease publication by the end of 2004, reports the Associated Press. The AP reports that the magazine "can no longer sustain financial losses that have totaled millions of dollars." Hope magazine, which has about 20,000 subscribers, says it celebrates the individuals and organizations who are working to make the world a better place.

Lifetime Magazine to Cease Publishing

Lifetime magazine, a magazine based on the popular cable network and a joint venture between Hearst and Walt Disney, will cease publishing with the October issue. The magazine had a rate base of 600,000. The Associated Press reported that Hearst said the editorial staff of Lifetime will be offered jobs at other publications. A note on the Lifetime Magazine website says, "Lifetime magazine subscribers will be contacted directly by Hearst Magazines and given the option to receive an alternative Hearst women's title for the remainder of their subscription cycle."

Microsoft Lays Off Xbox Employees

Microsoft has eliminated 76 positions from its Xbox department. The company also said it will reduce the number of games it publishes and really more on Xbox games produced by other game publishers.
