Instagram Unveils New Logo and App Design

Posted on May 11, 2016

Instagram has unveiled a new look for its logo as well as a new app design. The logo is a dramatic change from its previous logo which contained a camera face image. The new logo is just an outline of a camera. It is also very, very bright with yellow, orange, red, purple and other colors.

Instagram says the new logo was inspired by the previous app icon. The company says, "the new one represents a simpler camera and the rainbow lives on in gradient form."

The company told TechCrunch that Instagram has changed and evolved since it was founded over five years ago. Ian Spalter, Instagram’s Head of Design, says, "When Instagram was founded over five years ago, it was a place for you to easily edit and share photos. Over those five years, things have changed. Instagram is now a diverse community of interests where people are sharing more photos and videos than ever before, using new tools like Boomerang and Layout, and connecting in new ways through Explore."

That doesn't explain the need for the really bright colors. The new logo is not being well received but people do seem to like the new app design. Instagram says in the announcement that the "simpler design puts more focus on your photos and videos without changing how you navigate the app."

Instagram has so far continued to remain independent from Facebook, its parent company. They have added features like the algorithmic feed that originated on Facebook. AfroTech notes in a video report that the interface itself is still the same. Take a look:
