John Oliver Gives Brilliant Explanation of Net Neutrality Controversy

Posted on June 3, 2014

John Oliver gave a brilliant explanation of the proposed new Net Neutrality rules proposed by the FCC. Oliver points out that when corporations want to do something terrible in America, they make sure to cloak the explanation in something terribly boring so everyone will ignore it.

He explained how cable companies are trying to turn the internet into a class system with fast speeds for companies that pay more and slow speeds for everyone else. He points out that the head of the FCC is the former head of the cable lobbying organization, which he likens to asking a dingo to babysit your baby.

He then asks internet commentators to go to www.fcc.gov/comments and leave a comment supporting net neutrality and opposing the two speed plan. His call to action was impassioned and hilarious: "I would like to address internet commentators out there directly. Good evening, monsters. This may be the moment you've spent your whole lives training for...For once in your life, we need you to channel that anger -- that badly spelled bile that you normally reserve for unforgivable attacks on actresses you seem to think have put on weight, or politicians that you disagree with, or photos of your ex-girlfriend getting on with her life... We need you to get out and, for once in your lives, focus your indiscriminate rage in a useful direction. Seize your moment my lovely trolls, turn on caps lock, and fly my pretties, fly, fly!!" The system crashed for hours after his call to action, but it's back now. Take a look:
