Lie Detectors at Job Interviews

Posted on March 7, 2006

Most people get stressed out enough when it comes to the big job interview. Some new software might make the interviewee even more nervous. The software, created by Nemesysco, turns a laptop into a lie detector. The software attempts to determine how "trustworthy" a job applicant is.

Nemesysco's HR1 Automated Integrity Profiling/Risk Assessment system involves having the applicant talk into a telephone-like handset attached to a desktop PC. They have to answer a wide variety of questions from drug use to employee theft. The HR1 uses Nemesysco's Layered Voice Analysis (LVA) technology. This technology uses over 800 algorithms to analyze the potential employee's voice.

Nemesysco founder and CEO Amir Liberman says, "The technology doesn't care what you are saying. The technology analyzes the different paths that your brain is taking while it is deciding what to say next. For example, if you are excited, your voice gets higher and faster. If you are confused, your speech slows down. You can try and mask your reaction at the level that you can hear, but computers can hear much better."

It doesn't sound like much fun for the interviewee. What if someone is stressed by the interview itself -- will the software then determine that they are not trustworthy?
