Google has acquired the extremely popular YouTube.com (www.youtube.com) video sharing website. According to a Google press release the company will continue to operate as an independent website. Rumors had been buzzing about the deal in the blogosphere so it was not a big shock when the actual purchase was announced.
A Reuters article says Google plans more acquisitions of video-related companies. Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt told investors and news reporters on a conference call following news of the deal that YouTube will be "one of many investments" Google plans to make in the video field.YouTube.com has also announced new content deals with CBS, Sony BMG and Universal Music Group. Google's acquisition has sparked speculation about which of the many video sharing websites will sell next now that Google has acquired the most well-known video sharing tool. A Forbes article lists video sharing websites like VideoEgg, Metacafe, Break.com, Revver, Blinkx and Veoh as possibilities. Reuters reports that YouTube.com has implement a maximum length for videos distributed on its video sharing service. Videos longer than than 10 minutes will no longer be allowed. The move is an effort to reduce the amount of copyright infringing videos posted to the site. San Mateo, California-based YouTube, the Web's top destination for "viral" videos spread via word of mouth, has already been forced by broadcaster NBC to remove clips of the popular "Lazy Sunday" hip-hop spoof, which was originally broadcast on "Saturday Night Live."However, YouTube.com does have a director program which allows longer videos from directors and publishers that own the copyright to the videos. Media reviewers, bloggers and users complain that selections are skimpy and hard to find. Strict usage rules which prevent prime-time shows from being viewed offline, aren't prominently identified, and some shows promised initially aren't there.Part of the reason the Google's video offerings have not been well received is because some people been expecting a Google PC device to launch. Google does have a deal with CBS to sell episodes but it may take them a while to catch iTunes which was the first out of the gate and has already sold 8 million videos since October according to USA Today. The music video services, announced at South by Southwest 2005, will deliver videos that can be played back on Windows Mobile-based Portable Media Centers and select Smartphones and Pocket PCs. The mobile download service allows MediaPass Music subscribers access to download free music videos via a 30-day license to download videos to load onto portable devices. The service is delivering the latest content from popular artists such as Emma Bunton, Kate Ryan, as well as up-and-coming bands including Slunt, Submersed and The Comas. Internet Video Magazine has also expanded its collection of online videos and links to websites. New categories include political, music video, nerdy, holiday, travel and kid videos, as well as sports, news, TV commercials, etc. Internet Video Magazine said it also beefed up its collection of how to articles and tutorials, trend reports and product reviews targeted to video and film professionals, video hobbyists and home moviemakers. Posted on March 15, 2005 Permalink | | | Comments (View) | National Lampoon and Majestic Plan PG and PG13 Films National Lampoon has formed National Lampoon Clubhouse, a joint venture entity with Lorenzo Doumani's Majestic Entertainment that will result in a series of PG and PG13-rated theatrical and direct-to-video films. With National Lampoon Clubhouse, National Lampoon enters the world of family entertainment for the first time. Lorenzo Doumani, CEO of Majestic Entertainment and Majestic Resorts, will head National Lampoon Clubhouse as its President. Clubhouse is expected to release three full-length feature films per year, with budgets ranging from three to ten million dollars. The first three releases will be based on original stories by Doumani. Clubhouse's first film, Trick or Treat, is described as a scary comedy planned for a Halloween release. Posted on March 14, 2005 Permalink | | | Comments (View) | Online Video Viewing Becoming More Common The Online Publishers Association (OPA) has announced the results of its Online Video Viewing Study. Conducted in partnership with Frank N. Magid Associates, the study surveyed 27,841 Internet users age 13 and older and found that online video viewing is a common activity for many Internet users. More than half of those surveyed (51%) indicated that they watch video online at least once a month, 27% watch at least once a week and five percent watch video online daily. Most frequently done at home, online video viewing is strong throughout the day, evenings and weekends. While 47% view online video on from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., viewing peaks from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays with 57% indicating they watch online videos at that time. Viewership shows a second spike on weekends, with 43% indicating they usually watch online videos then. News clips, viewed by 66% of those surveyed, are the most commonly watched type of online video, followed by movie clips and trailers at 49%. However, sports highlights are watched most frequently, with 48% watching at least once a week, and 11% watching daily. Eighty-five percent of those surveyed said that when they watch videos online, they watch them in their entirety. Even among those who said they do not watch the video in its entirety, 61% say they watch until they have the information they want. Seventy percent of respondents said they had seen a video advertisement online, and 44% said they had taken some action as a result of seeing that ad.
