Adobe Systems Incorporated and Lightning Source, a subsidiary of Ingram Industries Inc., have announced an alliance to distribute eBooks and digital content over the Internet using the Adobe PDF Merchant software. The Adobe Acrobat Reader enables users to view eBooks through a variety of hardware platforms running either Windows or the Mac OS. Adobe's PDF Merchant software secures digital content for distribution and sales via the Internet.

``This is a pivotal move for both our companies,'' said Lightning Source President and CEO Ed Marino. ``It significantly bolsters the market positions of Lightning Source and Adobe. Here at Lightning Source, it will bring more flexibility to our customers and give them still more ways to get their titles into the hands of consumers.''

``By leveraging the volume of Lightning Source's digital library with the worldwide strength of its Ingram heritage, together we will significantly push forward the growth of the eBook market,'' said Joe Eschbach, vice president, ePaper Solutions Group at Adobe. ``We are aggressively working to expand the availability of eBook titles that can be read universally on any hardware device with the Acrobat Reader.''
