American Banker Launches Careers Magazine

Posted on January 12, 1998

American Banker has launched a monthly magazine to help financial professionals manage their careers amid the industry's upheaval. Turning Points, which makes its debut this month, will explore such topics as skills building, compensation and the changing requirements for success. Turning Points will be geared to everyone from first-time managers to senior-level executives. And the stories will span the full range of financial services -- banking, brokerage, insurance and more.

In the first edition, the cover story spotlights how low and middle-level employees are increasingly winning stock options, rewards once reserved for top executives. The story explores the options programs at such companies as BankAmerica Corp. and Travelers Group, and serves up tips to help employees evaluate such plans.

The magazine will routinely delve into the personal side of career management, with pieces on how to manage stress and how to balance work with family life. It also will explore some broad social issues, like the rise of diversity programs in financial services.

The magazine is being mailed to more than 20,000 readers around the country. For now, it is free of charge, but eventually it will have a paid circulation. American Banker, founded in 1836, is a unit of Thomson Financial Services.
