American Lawyer Media Launches Law News Network

Posted on December 9, 1998

American Lawyer Media, Inc. (ALM) today announced the launch of the Law News Network, an extensive daily legal news source. The site combines updated, breaking coverage and features drawn from ALM's 20 national and regional publications with original content, advertising and specialized legal subscription services. The site also includes a classified ad database of law industry jobs nationwide.

The Law News Network presents wide-ranging coverage of the days top legal news stories and features from the staff of ALM publications, including The American Lawyer, the National Law Journal and Corporate Counsel Magazine. Also highlighted are stories from, and direct links to, websites associated with ALM's daily and weekly regional legal newspapers, such as The New York Law Journal; Legal Times in Washington, D.C.; Texas Lawyer; The Recorder in San Francisco; and The Legal Intelligencer in Philadelphia.

The Law News Network site also features Open Court, containing opinion pieces, columns, letters, reviews and counterpoint authored by guest contributors on a wide variety of topics. The lively and controversial op-ed section addresses and debates issues related to law, business and politics. This week's section highlights contributions from USC Law Professor Susan Estrich on women at Harvard Law, Jeffrey Rosen's annotations on his recent testimony before the House Judiciary Committee impeachment inquiry, and antitrust maven William Kovacic's advice to Exxon and Mobil on finessing merger approval from the regulators.

"The Law News Network establishes the first truly national legal daily available to readers on a global basis," said William Pollak, president and Chief Executive Officer of ALM. "This site represents the first step in our online strategy to tap and integrate the resources of the entire ALM portfolio, as well as future strategic partners. The Law News Network will be an important, regular destination on the Web, not just for lawyers, but also for visitors seeking a unique perspective on business, politics and daily news events impacted by the law."

The Law News Network will replace ALM's current web sites, Law Journal Extra and Counsel Connect, on a phased basis and will incorporate many of the most popular features and online industry services currently available through those destinations. Plans call for development of targeted, subscription-based Web products, organized around specific legal practice areas and accessed via the network.
