AOL to Sell 800 Patents to Microsoft for Over $1 Billion

AOL LogoAOL has found a way to raise lots of money. They are going to sell 800 patents to Microsoft for $1.1 billion. TechCrunch says the patents sold relate to "advertising, search, content generation/management, social networking, mapping, multimedia/streaming and security." It also includes Netscape browser patents. AOL probably could have licensed some of these patents, but they wouldn't have got as much money.

The Wall Street Journal says AOL has been under pressure to do something with its patent portfolio. AOL's stock jumped over 40% on the news. Take a look:
