Australian Entrepreneur Craig Wright Claims He Created Bitcoin

Posted on May 2, 2016

Australian entrepreneur Craig Steven Wright claims he is the person behind Bitcoin. Wright says the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto is his. Satoshi Nakamoto was the pseudonym used by the Bitcoin creator.

BBC News reports that Wright revealed his Bitcoin identity to the BBC, the Economist and GQ. He also digitally signed messages using cryptographic keys that BBC News says "are inextricably linked to blocks of bitcoins known to have been created or 'mined' by Satoshi Nakamoto."

Some in the Bitcoin community dispute Wright's claims. Gavin Andresen, chief scientist at the Bitcoin Foundation, backs Wright in a blog post. Andresen says, "Part of that time was spent on a careful cryptographic verification of messages signed with keys that only Satoshi should possess. But even before I witnessed the keys signed and then verified on a clean computer that could not have been tampered with, I was reasonably certain I was sitting next to the Father of Bitcoin."

Andresen also says, "During our meeting, I saw the brilliant, opinionated, focused, generous - and privacy-seeking - person that matches the Satoshi I worked with six years ago."

The Techmeme collection of stories on Wright's claim shows many articles that are full of doubt. One post calls Wright's claim a scam. The Economist says nagging question remain despite Wright's cryptographic proof. They note that the creator who secretly continued to help developers for a while stopped abruptly in April 2011. It would be surprising for a person who sought such secrecy to suddenly emerge and accept the fame and recognition. However, Wright says he doesn't want any fame. He just wants to be left alone.

Wright says, "Some people will believe, some people won't and to tell you the truth I don't really care." He also says, "I didn't decide. I had people decide this matter for me."
