Belo has announced that it has acquired the Denton Publishing Company, publisher of the Denton Record-Chronicle and two free-distribution newspapers, the Lewisville News and The Grapevine Sun. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The Denton Record-Chronicle, with a circulation of 16,000 daily and 19,000 Sunday, serves Denton County, Texas. The Lewisville News, located in Lewisville was started in 1971 and is published three days a week with a circulation of approximately 20,000. The Grapevine Sun is published two days a week with a circulation of about 20,000. Denton Publishing Company also publishes the Entertainment Chronicle, a supplement to the Thursday Denton Record-Chronicle. The Entertainment Chronicle is also distributed independently of the Record-Chronicle across the campuses of the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University, both located in Denton.

In making the announcement, Burl Osborne, president of Belo's Publishing Division and publisher of The Dallas Morning News, said, "Under the leadership of the Cross and Patterson families, the Denton Record-Chronicle has a distinguished history of journalistic excellence and community service and is located in one of the fastest growing markets in Texas. This is an outstanding acquisition for Belo, and we look forward to participating in the growth of the newspaper and the Denton community."
