Bonnie Hill Named L.A. Times Sr. Vice President of Community Relations

Posted on August 21, 1998

Bonnie Guiton Hill has been named to the new position of senior vice president of community relations for the Los Angeles Times reporting to Kathryn M. Downing, the newspaper's president and chief executive officer, the newspaper announced.

Hill, who has a doctorate in education and extensive experience in the public, private and nonprofit sectors, will lead efforts to expand the impact of The Times' public affairs programs.

In her new position, Hill will oversee The Times' extensive community outreach activities, including The Times Fund, which has helped at-risk children throughout Southern California since its inception in 1944. She will also be responsible for the newspaper's communications department and will be instrumental in establishing a multi-faceted "Reading by 9" program at The Times aimed at increasing the reading skills of school children throughout the Southland.

Hill will also continue to serve as president and chief executive officer of The Times Mirror Foundation, a position she has held since joining Times Mirror, The Times' parent company, in February of 1997. In this capacity, she will continue to report to the Foundation's board of directors, which is chaired by Mark Willes, publisher of The Times and chairman and chief executive officer of Times Mirror.

"Every day, this newspaper provides an extraordinary public service through its far-reaching and top-quality journalism," said Willes. "As a corporate citizen, we also play an important role in helping our community be all that it can be," he added. "Under Bonnie's leadership, we hope to broaden that role and be an even stronger agent for change and promoter of common understanding."
