Posted on March 8, 2002

Bonus Books, a 30-year-old Chicago book publisher, has been acquired by Jeffrey Stern, a publishing executive based in Los Angeles, California. Prior to acquiring Bonus Books, Stern spent much of the last twenty years in the upper management levels of high profile companies, including having served as President and Publisher of Details magazine.

Bonus Books, an independent publishing house specializing in nonfiction professional and trade books, has a backlist which includes a series with Poynter Institute called Best Newspaper Writing 2001, trade publications including a series of gambling books called Get the Edge, as well as books on sports, fundraising, broadcasting, direct marketing and medicine.

"I view Bonus Books as a hidden gem. It has a great backlist and a strong foundation to build upon. I plan to significantly expand the number of titles we publish each year as well as develop new categories of books that we will publish," said Publisher and CEO Stern.

Stern's first book since acquiring the publishing company, Covering Catastrophe reveals what it was like for broadcast professionals to report the September 11th terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. The book is due out in April. All royalties from the sales of Covering Catastrophe, and a matching contribution from the publisher, will be donated to two 9/11 charities.
