Deadline Extended For Financial Writers and Editors Awards

Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism and Strong Investments, co-sponsors of the Financial Writers and Editors Awards, announced that the publication deadline for this year's awards is June 30, 2000. All entries must be submitted by August 7, 2000.
To recognize the best coverage of personal finance and investing by Midwestern and national news writers, $2,500 will be awarded for work produced during the 12 months ended June 30, 2000, in any one of the following eight categories.
- Best financial columnist (submit three columns). This award goes to a Midwestern journalist writing for the daily, weekly, or monthly press.
- Best overall coverage of news for the investor by a daily or weekly Midwestern news organization. This award goes to the editor of the news coverage. A selection of four editions of the entire business section or news magazine published in that particular month must be submitted. The selected month is February.
- Best spot news on a personal finance topic affecting investors. This award goes to a Midwestern journalist writing for the daily press.
- Best feature on a personal finance topic affecting investors. This award goes to a Midwestern journalist writing for the daily, weekly, or monthly press.
- Best general markets coverage that helps investors understand the stock, bond, or other financial markets. This award goes to a Midwestern journalist writing for the daily press.
- Best profile of a publicly traded Midwestern company that offers useful information for investors. This award goes to a Midwestern journalist working for the daily, weekly, or monthly press.
- Best broadcast feature or broadcast series useful to investors. Midwestern or national.
- Best feature on a personal finance topic affecting investors. This award goes to a journalist writing for the daily, weekly, or monthly press. Midwestern or national.
To enter, applicants should submit an original and one copy to George Harmon, Northwestern University, 1845 Sheridan Road, Fisk 310, Evanston, Illinois, 60208. Attention: Medill/Strong Investments Awards. There is no application form to complete.
Awards will be presented at the Financial Writers and Editors Conference on October 10, 2000. This one-day event, co-sponsored by Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism and Strong Investments, will feature speakers and workshops designed to help business journalists develop and improve skills as financial or investment writers. Included in the conference will be panels of nationally known financial writers and investment experts, as well as speakers on issues of importance to the financial press.
