Digital Chef, an online retailer of gourmet food and cooking products has announced it has completed a new, $35 million round of venture financing. The company has also purchased rights to the name and content of popular healthy cooking magazine, Eating Well, and hired the former editor-in-chief of the publication to lead editorial development for Digital Chef.

"Digital Chef carries more products and offers more cooking resources than anyone else on the Web," says Kevin Appelbaum, CEO of Digital Chef. "Our new funding and the acquisition of Eating Well magazine's name and content point to our ongoing site expansion. Our ultimate goal is to become a vital and integral part of our consumers daily lives."

The assets acquired from Eating Well magazine will add significant new food and nutrition content to Digital Chef's site. Nearly 2,000 recipes created by the Eating Well test kitchen will be integrated into Digital Chef's database of more than 3,000 recipes. Other content from the magazine on healthy eating will also be featured on the site.

Former Eating Well editor-in-chief, Marcelle Langan DiFalco will become the editorial director for Digital Chef, spearheading the development of ongoing original content for the site. DiFalco brings more than 10 years of food editorial experience to Digital Chef. Eating Well magazine, which ceased publication with its March/April 1999 issue, was published by Eating Well Publishing Company, a joint venture of Hachette Filipacchi Magazines and Telemedia Publishing.
