ESPN.com Launches as Flagship Service of New Online Sports Network

Posted on September 3, 1998

ESPN Internet Ventures will soon debut ESPN.com, which ESPN hopes will be the gateway to sports on the Internet. ESPN.com is introducing a design that allows for more integrated and seamless programming with other ESPN Network services such as the official sites of the NFL, NBA and NASCAR. Users can also access content from ESPN.com's new associate partners -- MountainZone.com, Tennis Week, SoccerTimes and U.S. College Hockey Online. The launch of ESPN.com coincides with the NFL's season-opening weekend. During second-quarter 1998, ESPN Internet Ventures sites generated 864 million page views and 124 million visits.

"We have built the first Internet sports network, anchored by ESPN.com," said Tom Phillips, President of ESPN Internet Ventures. "The new navigation and design are faster, simpler and easier, providing an experience to the millions of visitors to ESPN Network that can't be duplicated."
