Posted on September 16, 1997

Excite, Inc. announced BarnesandNoble.com, a subsidiary of Barnes & Noble, Inc., as the exclusive bookseller on WebCrawler, one of Excite's flagship brands. In a 2-year distribution, electronic commerce and marketing agreement, BarnesandNoble.com will integrate its content throughout WebCrawler's new topic-based channel environment.

"Leveraging our multi-brand strategy, today's announcement signals not only WebCrawler's entry into electronic commerce, but establishes the Excite Network as a leader in electronic commerce," said George Bell, president and CEO, Excite, Inc. "BarnesandNoble.com's content and expertise in electronic commerce is a boon to WebCrawler and its users."

BarnesandNoble.com's content will be incorporated throughout WebCrawler's 15 new channels in October, and will be the centerpiece of WebCrawler's Arts & Books Channel at http://www.webcrawler.com/Arts/. BarnesandNoble.com's extensive database of authors and book titles will also be integrated with the WebCrawler Shortcuts search capability -- which offers consumers immediate links to relevant book titles from search results pages. Both WebCrawler Channels and search results will feature direct links to BarnesandNoble.com's transaction page, allowing WebCrawler users to purchase books with one click. WebCrawler will receive a percentage of the resulting transactions generated on BarnesandNoble.com.
