Knight Ridder has announced the publication of a new free daily newspaper called the The East Bay Daily News to serve Berkeley, Emeryville, Piedmont, Kensington, Albany and parts of Oakland. The East Bay Daily News will publish Monday through Friday as part of the company's Daily News Group. The group includes the Palo Alto Daily News and four additional free daily newspapers serving communities in the peninsula south of San Francisco. The initial press run of The East Bay Daily News was 5,000. The goal is to reach 10,000 within days. Its editorial focus will be heavily local, but will also offer short regional and national news stories designed for people who want to read a compact newspaper.
