Posted on August 4, 1997

Judy Kallet, currently vice president of production and technology at The Hartford Courant, will join the Los Angeles Times in the new position of senior vice president and chief information officer, announced Richard T. Schlosberg III, The Times' publisher and chief executive officer.

In her new position, Kallet will report directly to Schlosberg. She will be responsible for creating integrated and effective information technology systems in support of Times Mirror and The Times' extensive editorial, publishing and business activities. She will oversee the Times technology resources group and the Times Mirror information systems division, which were recently consolidated into a new department at the Times.

"Translating the rich potential of today's evolving information technology into systems that give us every competitive advantage is critical to our future growth and operating efficiency," said Schlosberg. "The size and complexity of our operation demand the most experienced, creative professionals in this field," he added. "Judy Kallet is just such a professional, and I am very excited about the contributions she will make to the Los Angeles Times."

"I look forward to the challenges and rewards of contributing to one of the world's great newspapers," said Kallet. "Technology offers powerful tools for success, and I'm excited about working with The Times' talented staff to meet business objectives."

As vice president of production and technology at The Hartford Courant, Kallet is responsible for the newspaper's business, publishing, personal computer, telecommunications and prepress systems, as well as the newspaper's press, mailroom, distribution and engineering divisions.

She chairs The Courant's Technology Committee, which is composed of representatives from many departments working to ensure that technology enables The Courant to meet its business objectives. Kallet also led Times Mirror's CoOpportunity Task Force, a collaborative effort of the company's East Coast newspapers that established ways to improve financial and benefits administration for the newspapers as a group.

Kallet joined The Courant in 1992 as director of information technology, was named vice president of information technology and prepress in 1995, and was promoted to her most recent position last May.

Before joining The Courant, Kallet was senior vice president of information systems for Fleet Bank, one of the largest banks in the country. She oversaw systems and programming for the bank, leading a staff of 250 programmers and managers in four states and working on mergers, acquisitions, data center consolidations, conversions, software development, package implementation and customizations, and procurement.

Kallet earned her masters of science degree in management from The Hartford Graduate Center in 1989 and her bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from Brooklyn College in 1971.
