Life To Cease Publishing Monthly After May 2000 Issue

Posted on March 17, 2000

Time Inc. has announced that Life magazine will no longer be published monthly after its May 2000 issue. The well-known Life brand will be maintained with the magazine periodically publishing special issues. In addition, Life will continue to publish books under its name, and will launch a web-based business. The overall management of the Life brand will be under the direction of the Time Magazine Group.

Life's rate base is 1.5 million. Its subscriber file will be fulfilled by other Time Inc. magazines. Life has been published monthly since 1978. The magazine was launched in 1936 and was discontinued as a weekly in 1972. Time Inc. expects to place the majority of the Life staff within the company.

In making the announcement, Don Logan, Chairman and CEO of Time Inc., and Norman Pearlstine, Editor-in-Chief of Time Inc., said, ``Life, which has chronicled the world's great moments with its signature photography, is a valuable and honored franchise, whose name deserves to be preserved. However, despite the exceptional efforts of a number of talented publishers and editors, the publishing formula for a monthly, general interest magazine was just not sustainable. After much thought and discussion, it was decided that this new strategy would be the best way to maintain the Life brand.''
