Merriam-Webster Introduces New Electronic Reference Product

Posted on August 11, 1997

Network users and administrators everywhere will soon have access to language reference tools with the introduction of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary & Thesaurus, Network Edition in August 1997. Available for Windows, Macintosh, and UNIX networks and intranets, this tool combines the full text of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth Edition and Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Thesaurus. The CD-ROM also includes M-W Link, which allows users to access the dictionary and thesaurus from most Windows or Macintosh programs with a simple hot-key combination.

"Our new network product goes beyond a simple spell checker, allowing users to check definitions, pronunciations, word origins, synonyms, and a vast amount of other up-to-date information about words," said John Morse, Publisher of Merriam-Webster Inc. "Its 21 individual search options, including wildcards and Booleans, let users take full advantage of our dictionary and thesaurus."

The Network Edition ships on one CD-ROM that includes Windows, Windows NT, Macintosh, and UNIX versions. License packages are available for networks with 2-10, 11-25, 26-50, or 51-100 users; packages for larger networks are available on a contract basis by contacting Merriam-Webster at 800-201-5029, ext. 148. Fees are based on a one-time purchase.

Merriam-Webster Inc. acquired the rights to revise and publish Noah Webster's dictionaries in 1843. Since then, Merriam-Webster has maintained an ongoing commitment to innovation in language reference publishing. Today, the company continues as the clear leader, with electronic reference products, learning tools, and word games.
