Myspace Loses Years of Music and Photos During Botched Server Migration

Posted on March 18, 2019

Myspace emerged from the shadows today with the sad news that it lost years of music, photos and videos during a botched server migration. Years ago, Myspace was competing to be the world's leading social network. Today, many young teens are not aware it still exists.

The "stats and facts" section of Myspace says there are 53 million songs on the site. This may have been before the migration disaster. It says there are 13,000 songs uploaded daily. Myspace also says, "Today, we have an eclectic team of 150 engineers, designers, writers, and strategists who live and breathe Myspace."

The files lost were uploaded between 2003 and 2015 according to the story currently trending on Techmeme and Twitter. Some Twitter users are shocked to see the old social network in their timelines. Boing Boing has appropriately used in an image of a shredder in its post about the news.

Details of the massive data loss emerged on a Reddit thread. The Reddit users not that a message on Myspace explains: "As a result of a server migration project, any photos, videos, and audio files you uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available on or from Myspace. We apologize for the inconvenience and suggest that you retain your back up copies."

This is very sad news for anyone who had files on Myspace they wanted but never backed up. Today's leading social networks seem very reliable but you should keep copies of anything you uploaded to them (that you want to retain) in case there is a disaster like this.
