New Watersports Magazine Debuts in South Florida

Posted on February 13, 2004

A new local boating and watersport magazine has launched in southern Florida. The new publication, Wave South Florida, is a joint venture between NatCom Marketing, a South Florida marketing firm, and Biscayne Bay Publishing, a wholly owned subsidiary of Knight Ridder.

The tabloid-sized, glossy-covered magazine and its related website will serve as a local guides to the area's ocean of recreational resources. Readers can use the magazine and site to find listing and contact information for hundreds of groups, associations, clubs, service providers and retailers. Readers can also use the magazine and site to learn about where they can dock-up and eat at local waterfront restaurants. Feature stories in the magazine will cover watersport opportunities and the intriguing local characters who take advantage of them.

"We see a void for this type of marketing vehicle and find this especially surprising given the highly attractive demographics that watersport enthusiasts offer," said Bob Rodriguez, NatCom's CEO. "The market is ready for this type of magazine and we look forward to having Wave South Florida become a dominant category player. We will be strictly focused on local water-related opportunities, in, on and around the water."

To spearhead Wave South Florida's introduction, long-time advertising executive Jose Chao joined the team as general manager and partner. Chao brings more than 20 years of marketing-related experience, most recently as publisher of Newsweek and Motor Trend en Espanol.

Biscayne Bay Publishing, Inc. publishes an array of books and magazines in the travel and tourism arena, as well as weekly newspapers and magazines in South Florida. BBP is a sister company to The Miami Herald Publishing Co.

NatCom, founded in 1982, provides full-service marketing communications programs. Its clients have included multinational concerns such as Bombardier, Chevron/Texaco, Lucent Technologies, Avaya, Allegro Resorts and the U.S. Federal Government.
