Newsweek.com Website Launches

Posted on October 5, 1998

Newsweek.com, an interactive Internet version of Newsweek magazine, has made its debut on the Web at http://www.newsweek.com. Newsweek.com supplements the magazine's print edition with daily news updates and analysis, photo galleries and Web guides.

"Newsweek.com reflects the editorial quality and high production values of the magazine in the interactive world," says Richard M. Smith, editor-in-chief and chief executive officer of Newsweek.

Newsweek.com has partnered with others to make it a destination site for timely news, analysis and background information. Washingtonpost.com provides coverage and continuous updates of breaking news. Encyclopaedia Britannica is Newsweek.com's partner for providing extensive background information on a selected topic and a co-branded guide to the Internet. For surfers seeking quick news bits, Newsweek sections -- Periscope, Cyberscope and Newsmakers -- will have new items posted each weekday. The cover story will be expanded with original hypertext annotations. Newsweek.com's photo galleries will have rich graphics, descriptive text and audio of photographers describing their work.

"We have the unique opportunity to build on the inherent strengths of The Washington Post Company family of media properties to provide readers with a complete news and information solution," says Marc Teren, president and publisher of Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive.
