Wyatt Kash, an award-winning, 25-year veteran of business-to-business journalism, will join Government Computer News as editor Oct. 4. Kash will be the fourth editor in the magazine's 21-year history. Kash is currently editor of Big Builder magazine at Hanley-Wood LLC of Washington. Also at Hanley-Wood, Kash was publisher of a group of eight online publications in the building, remodeling and building plans fields. Before joining Hanley-Wood in 2000, Kash spent 20 years at Lebhar- Friedman Inc. of New York, where he held a series of increasingly responsible editorial jobs leading to publisher of National Home Center News. Kash is a graduate of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, where he majored in magazine journalism.

Emily Listfield, editor in chief of Gruner + Jahr USA's Fitness magazine, has announced the appointment of Julia Heckler as style director. Previously, Heckler served as the fashion director for Shape En Espanol and Thalia magazines since 2003. She was responsible for creating all fashion editorial content from concept to production including writing and editing for the entire Latino Group. She styled all covers, fitness features, real women makeovers, front of the book and fashion well stories. In addition, she worked closely with advertising and marketing executives for promotional events. Prior to that, Heckler was fashion director at Grace Woman magazine where she oversaw the fashion department and worked with the editor in chief to create all fashion editorial content.

Robert Levin, former President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution for MGM and President of Worldwide Marketing for Sony Pictures Entertainment and The Walt Disney Studios, has joined MoviePartners, Inc. in an advisory position. In addition to this advisory position, Levin will also be involved as a producer of feature films for MoviePartners, Inc. Mr. Levin's first project with MoviePartners is a comedy horror feature film titled Holy Terror written by Frank and Margaret South, with Frank South attached to direct. The Phi Beta Kappa Society announced on Thursday, September 9, 2004, the appointment of Robert S. Wilson as editor of The American Scholar, Phi Beta Kappa's quarterly journal of intellectual and cultural affairs. John Churchill, the Society's chief executive officer, said that Wilson had been confirmed as editor by its governing body, the Senate, after nomination by a search committee that began work last spring. Mr. Wilson served for six years as editor of Preservation, published by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He was founding literary editor of Civilization, the magazine of the Library of Congress. Mr. Wilson was Book Editor and columnist at USA Today for eleven years, and an assistant editor for six years at The Washington Post. He comes to The American Scholar from AARP, where he held chief editorial responsibility for the Bulletin, a monthly news publication. The Scholar's Winter 2005 issue will begin Mr. Wilson's tenure as editor.

John Hollon has been named editor of Workforce Management magazine. Hollon joins the human resources title from the San Diego Business Journal where he served as editor-in-chief, directing the editorial staff and all news content. With Hollon's appointment, former editor Carroll Lachnit assumes the role of executive editor, reporting to Hollon. Hollon's media experience includes serving on daily newspapers, Internet, consumer and b2b magazines as well as his most recent stint on a business weekly. As editor, Hollon, will be responsible for the editorial direction as well as the day-to-day management of the Workforce Management's editorial as the publication further refines its coverage of human resources issues and strategies. Lachnit has led Workforce Management's newsroom since 2000. As executive editor, Lachnit will be responsible for developing and editing magazine content.

Yoga Journal announced that Lynn Lehmkuhl has joined the company as publisher. Lehmkuhl was most recently the publisher of Ladies' Home Journal. Lehmkuhl served as publisher of Ladies' Home Journal from November 2002 until last week. Lehmkuhl is an avid and longtime yoga practitioner and a certified yoga teacher.

Reader's Digest has announced the addition of award winning journalist and television host, Maria Bartiromo as a regular contributor to the magazine. Bartiromo will write the magazine's "Money Talks" column which debuts in the October 2004 issue, on newsstands September 24. Bartiromo joined CNBC in 1993 after spending five years as a producer and assignment editor with CNN Business News. In 1995, she became the first journalist to report live from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on a daily basis, where she covered breaking news for the network's unscripted and fast-paced business morning program, "Squawk Box." Bartiromo's book, Use the News: How to Separate the Noise from the Investment Nuggets and Make Money in Any Economy was published by HarperCollins in June 2001 and was on the major bestseller lists.

John J. Fish, publisher of The Topeka Capital-Journal, has been named president and publisher of the Naples (Fla.) Daily News, effective Oct. 4. Fish, 46, comes to the Daily News after more than four years as publisher in Topeka. He was assistant general manager of The Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle for two years before taking the position at The Capital-Journal. The Naples Daily News, which has a circulation of 57,000 newspapers Monday through Saturday and 69,000 on Sundays, is owned and operated by The E. W. Scripps Company. Fish succeeds Robert Burdick, who left Naples to become publisher of The Gazette in Colorado Springs, Colo.

AuthorHouse, a provider of self-publishing services, has tapped an Indiana executive to pilot the company's meteoric growth. At an internal employee meeting Sept. 1, company president Robert McCormack introduced CEO Bryan Smith to employees. A 1992 graduate of Butler University with a bachelor's degree in finance, the 34-year-old CEO began as a consultant for Andersen Worldwide before striking out on his own. He worked with both Fortune 500 and entrepreneurial companies to enter new businesses, grow and improve existing operations and pursue acquisitions, divestiture and funding opportunities. He later moved on to Gazelle Tech Ventures, an Indianapolis-based venture capital firm. During his tenure at Gazelle TechVentures, Smith also served as chairman of the board of AuthorHouse for two years.

Active Interest Media (AIM) has named executive Marie Galastro to the position of Publisher and General Manager of The Garlinghouse Company. In this role, Galastro will be directly responsible for the overall strategic direction and management of Garlinghouse's home plan magazines, books, and internet business. Garlinghouse is relocating this month from Glastonbury, Connecticut to Chantilly, Virginia where it will share space and resources with AIM's Homebuyer Publications division; publishers of Log Home Living, Timber Frame Homes, Log Home Design Ideas, and Building Systems Magazines. Galastro joins Garlinghouse with fifteen years of experience in home plans, design, and ecommerce based businesses. Most recently, she served as President of Drummond Designs US operations where she headed the company's successful expansion from Canada forging key publishing partnerships and revenue building alliances. Prior to Drummond, Galastro spent ten years with Hachette Filipacchi Media where she served in positions of increasing responsibility and ultimately as Publisher of the company's Home Plans Group and Director of Ecommerce.

The Real Cities Network announced the addition of Advance Internet and The (Toledo) Blade to its national advertising network of local news and information web sites. With the addition of Advance's site in Portland, Oregon, Real Cities says it includes 22 of the top 30 media markets. Advance Internet brings to the Real Cities Network 10 websites affiliated with newspapers owned by Advance Publications Inc., including MLive.com in Michigan, al.com in Alabama, NJ.com in New Jersey, cleveland.com in Ohio, NOLA.com in New Orleans, PennLive.com in central Pennsylvania, MassLive.com in Western Massachusetts, SILive.com in Staten Island, Syracuse.com in central New York, and OregonLive.com in Portland.

Dolan Media Company said it had agreed to acquire the rights to publish four Southern Colorado "civilian enterprise" military newspapers from Gowdy Printcraft, Inc. The papers are The Mountaineer, serving Fort Carson; Space Observer, serving Peterson Air Force Base; Academy Spirit, serving the U.S. Air Force Academy; and Satellite Flyer, serving Schriever AFB. They are the official newspapers with exclusive on-base distribution of approximately 32,000 each week. All of the military installations are in the Colorado Springs area. The transaction is subject to approval from U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force officials.

The Kelsey Group has introduced Local Media Journal, a new bi-weekly source of market intelligence, delivering the firm's perspectives on local business and directional media. Coverage is focused on key directional media segments -- print and online Yellow Pages, local search, vertical directories and interactive local advertising.

T&F Informa< has announced the launch of BioExecutive International, its new business and marketing publication for the biotech industry. BioExecutive International (BEI) will be published 6 times annually, debuting with a Dec 04/Jan 05 issue as a sister publication to BioProcess International, the leading international publication devoted to development and manufacture of biotherapeutics and biodiagnostics. BioExecutive International will offer information and insights focused on: strategic planning, executive education, HR management, finance, infrastructure, product development, investor and public relations, marketing, and other critical areas of executive responsibility.

Universal Studio has acquired the rights to the Zoey Dean novel The A-List (Little, Brown and Company Books for Young Readers, 2003). The film, which will be scripted by screenwriters Pam Falk and Mike Ellis (The Wedding Planner) follows the cultural adjustment of a 17-year-old girl who leaves Manhattan her senior year and enters the lives of the rich and famous at Beverly Hills High. Alloy Entertainment will produce the film with Alloy President Leslie Morgenstein as Producer and Vice President Bob Levy acting as Executive Producer. The 4-book series was acquired by Cindy Eagan, Senior Editor at Little, Brown and Company, from 17th Street Productions, a subsidiary of Alloy Entertainment. Eagan and 17th Street are also the creative team behind another Little, Brown best-selling series Gossip Girl. The second two books in The A-List, Girls on Film and Blonde Ambition both hit The New York Times Bestseller lists within weeks of their publication. The fourth title, Tall Cool One, is scheduled to arrive in stores this spring. Little, Brown and Alloy have already signed up an additional 4 books to continue the series through Spring 2007.

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. (MSO) announced that it has entered into agreements with Mark Burnett and an affiliated entity under which Mr. Burnett will advise and consult with the company regarding various television matters, including developing opportunities to evolve the future Martha Stewart Living daily syndicated television show and relating to the development and production of a primetime network television series to feature Martha Stewart. Mr. Burnett will consult with Ms. Stewart and the team at Martha Stewart Living Television Productions, led by President Heidi Diamond, on new programming opportunities. Current initiatives from MSLTV Productions, based at MSO's state-of-the-art studio in Westport, CT, include the recently announced Everyday Food, a new television program that will air on PBS stations nationwide beginning in January 2005; new weddings programming to air on The Style Network in first quarter 2005; and ongoing international efforts.

XM Satellite Radio, a provider of satellite radio with more than 2.1 million subscribers, has announced the introduction of XM Radio Online, a premium Internet music service to debut in early October. XM Radio Online subscribers will be able to listen to XM's commercial-free music channels and a variety of other XM content, including The Bob Edwards Show, over the Internet for a monthly fee of $7.99. XM Satellite Radio subscribers will receive a discounted rate for XM Radio Online of $3.99 a month.

Western Writers of America is taking steps to help the Granby public library recover from damage caused when an angry resident drove a bulldozer through town in June, destroying many public buildings, including the town hall where the library was located. WWA President Rita Cleary and Candy Moulton, editor of the organization's Roundup Magazine, delivered more than 200 books to the Granby Library Sept. 13. The books -- most of them new -- were donated by members of the organization dedicated to writing about the American West. The library recently reopened in new temporary quarters and planning is under way for a new library, Librarian Cindy Eubank said. The library's fiction and Western book collection was most seriously damaged in the bulldozer incident, Eubank said. WWA members include fiction and nonfiction writers recognized for their work in all types of books, periodicals, screenplays and other media. Within a week the WWA board had endorsed the "Granby Library Project," and members began donating books. The first contribution of 25 Western novels came from seven-time Spur Award winning author Elmer Kelton of San Angelo, Texas. They included his books The Good Old Boys, which became a movie starring Tommy Lee Jones, and The Time It Never Rained. Founded in 1953, the nonprofit Western Writers of America is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the heritage of the American West, past and present.

Little, Brown and Company has signed best-selling young adult novelist, Cecily von Ziegesar, to write an additional 3 books for her New York Times bestselling series Gossip Girl. In addition to this feat, von Ziegesar has also been signed to create a spin-off of the lucrative series entitled The It Girl. Gossip Girl captured the hearts of all teens and twenty-somethings by documenting the lives of the student body of Constance Billard, a fictional, tony private school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The series currently boasts over one million copies in print, and has spent a total of 18 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. The popularity of the series caught the attention of Warner Brothers, who acquired the film rights to the original novel, and is currently producing a major motion picture based on the book to debut in 2006, starring teen ingenue Lindsay Lohan and scripted by Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls). The It Girl is based around popular Gossip Girl character Jenny Humphrey who decides to leave Constance Billard and enroll at one of the East Coast's most elite boarding schools, Waverly Prep. The series will feature a new cast of characters and will follow their fast times and crazy adventures. Both acquisitions were obtained by Cindy Eagan, Senior Editor at Little, Brown and Company, from Sarah Burnes at Burnes and Clegg, in cooperation with Alloy Entertainment. They are also the creative team behind another Little, Brown The New York Times Best-selling series The A-List.

Tribune Publishing has announced additional revisions to the circulation figures of Newsday and Hoy, New York, for the 12-month period ending Sept. 30, 2003, and the six-month period ended March 31, 2004. The updated circulation figures are being announced in advance of the release of the Audit Bureau of Circulations' (ABC) final audit report for Newsday for the 12-month period ended Sept. 30, 2003, which is expected in mid-October. The ABC audit for the six-month period ending March 31, 2004 is expected to be completed and released by mid-November. Based on information gathered from ABC's ongoing audit and Tribune's internal investigation at Newsday:

  • For the 12-month period ending Sept. 30, 2003, daily circulation is expected to be between 480,000 and 490,000, and Sunday circulation is expected to be between 570,000 and 580,000.
  • For the six-month period ending March 31, 2004, daily circulation is expected to be between 480,000 and 490,000, and Sunday circulation is expected to be between 540,000 and 550,000.
  • For the 12-month period ending Sept. 30, 2004, daily and Sunday circulation is expected, due to seasonal fluctuations, to be somewhat below the March 2004 range.

    Based on information gathered during Tribune's internal investigation at Hoy, New York:

  • For the 12-month period ending Sept. 30, 2003, daily circulation is expected to be between 45,000 and 55,000. The ABC audit for this period is expected to be completed and released no later than November 1.
  • For the six-month period ending March 31, 2004, daily circulation is expected to be between 40,000 and 50,000. The ABC audit for this period is expected to be completed and released by mid-November.
