Red Herring Communications Names Rafe Needleman to Lead Enhanced Red Herring Online

Posted on January 5, 1999

Red Herring Communications, publisher of Red Herring, today announced that Rafe Needleman will be the new editor of Red Herring Online. Needleman, who spent two years as the editor of CNET.com, joined Red Herring Communications last March as editorial director of its event division. His shift to online coincides with a major editorial expansion of Red Herring Online, which has its own editorial staff separate from that of Red Herring magazine.

"Red Herring Online is one of the only sites on the Net where readers can find original reporting and analysis of all aspects of technology and business," said Needleman, "and we intend to make it even more of a must-read for anyone who needs to know what's happening in this industry -- not just weekly, or even daily, but hourly. We've quadrupled the size of our editorial writing staff so that each day we can deliver several exclusive online-stories that uncover the issues behind the stories rather than parroting some company's party line. Today's online readers are too savvy to be satisfied with newswire retreads."

"Our mission," he continued, "will be to focus on the areas that Red Herring is noted for: news and analysis, investing, and venture capital. Plus, there will be several high-profile columnists writing exclusively for Red Herring Online, including yours truly. On top of all that, readers will be able to access our exclusive database of 1,000 technology-company profiles. Nobody else has anything remotely comparable."

A veteran journalist, Needleman is the recipient of several Computer Press Awards, including best hardware review, best software review, and best online review. In addition to his tenure at CNET, he was editor-in-chief of BYTE Magazine. He also has worked for a variety of Ziff-Davis publications, serving as editor of Corporate Computing magazine, the reviews editor for PC/Computing, and as the manager of advanced technologies for ZD Labs.
