Rich Karlgaard Named Publisher of Forbes Magazine

Posted on June 2, 1998

Richard P. Karlgaard is the new Publisher of Forbes, effective July 1. Steve Forbes, President and Chief Executive Officer of Forbes Inc. and Editor-in-Chief of Forbes magazine, made the announcement today at the company's New York headquarters. Karlgaard, 43, was previously Editor of Forbes ASAP, a technology publication for executive decision makers. His successor at Forbes ASAP will be named shortly. Karlgaard replaces Group Publisher Jeffrey M. Cunningham, who is forming a new multi-media company to acquire and create media properties.

In his role as Publisher, Rich Karlgaard will write a column about business in the new economy to appear in each issue of Forbes. He will be based in the company's offices in Burlingame, California, and will move to the new Forbes Building there this fall.

"Rich has had exceptional success as Editor of Forbes ASAP and as founding Editor of Upside," said Steve Forbes. "A forward-looking, original thinker who has co-founded and edited two business publications, he understands the information needs of top executives in the new economy. Rich is just the person to articulate Forbes' unique approach to business reporting, and its importance, to readers and advertisers alike."

Rich Karlgaard has been the Editor of Forbes ASAP since its launch in December, 1992. Under his direction, the magazine has become known for its coverage of business in the information age. The first technology publication written for top executives, Forbes ASAP combines insightful reporting about industry players and corporate strategies with probing, big picture analyses. Stories have included: "Five Days with Bill Gates;" "The Coming Software Shift," the first piece to reveal the potential of Netscape; and "The New Technology Elite," profiling noted technology CEOs.

Prior to launching Forbes ASAP, Karlgaard was co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Upside magazine, which covers the computer industry and venture capital, from 1989 to 1992. He is also co-founder of the Churchill Club, a Silicon Valley public affairs group which has grown to 2,500 members and caused him last year to win an Ernst and Young "Entrepreneur Of The Year" award in the Silicon Valley region.
