ESPN Magazine Editor in Chief John Papanek announced that award-winning journalist Rick Telander will join the staff as a Chicago-based contributor.

"Rick is simply one of the best sports writers in America today," said Papanek. "His diverse background and talents will be an asset to both the magazine and the networks."

In addition to the articles he will write for the biweekly publication, Telander has signed on with ESPN for appearances on Sports Reporters and ESPN Radio. Telander will also serve as an editorial consultant to SportsCentury, ESPN's 18-month series of programming initiatives that will review the greatest sporting events, athletes, coaches and developments of the past 100 years.

While contributing to ESPN Magazine, Telander will continue as the lead sports columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, a position he has held since April 1995.

ESPN Magazine, launching March 11, 1998, will utilize ESPN's award-winning variety of sports news resources combined with fast-paced, timely, in-depth commentary and opinion. Sporting a 10 x 12-inch format, the magazine will publish biweekly. ESPN Magazine is a joint venture of Disney Publishing, ESPN and Hearst.
