SABEW Elects New President, Directors

Posted on May 7, 1999

The Society of American Business Editors and Writers has elected Charley Blaine, editor of Better Homes and Gardens Family Money magazine, as its president. Blaine was elected to a one-year term as SABEW's leader at the group's annual convention that ended Wednesday in Washington, DC. SABEW is the largest trade group for financial journalists.

"Business journalists face unprecedented change in the next few years," Blaine said. "Reporters and editors face new competition from the Internet as well as from other media. It's an exciting time to be in journalism. It's our job at SABEW to help our members identify and work with the opportunities that the new realities offer."

SABEW members elected Barney Calame of The Wall Street Journal as its vice president; Bill Barnhart of Chicago Tribune as its treasurer and Charles Jaffe of The Boston Globe as its secretary.

Also at the convention, SABEW elected a new board of governors: Frank Brill of The Journal News (Westchester, N.Y.); Stephen Dunphy of The Seattle Times; Cheryl Hall of The Dallas Morning News; Peter Hillan of San Jose Mercury News; Lisa Holton, freelance writer; Kathy Kristof of the Los Angeles Times; Jonathan Lansner of The Orange County (Calif.) Register; Sougata Mukherjee of American City Business Journals; Richard Papiernik of Nation's Restaurant News; Randy Picht of The Associated Press; Mark Rohner of Bloomberg News; Mark Russell of the Cleveland Plain Dealer; Richard Satran of Reuters; Craig Schwed of Gannett News Service; Rex Seline of Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram; Marcia Stepanek of BusinessWeek magazine; and Alecia Swasy of the St. Petersburg Times. Stepanek is a new governor, replacing outgoing president Susan Wells of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Society of American Business Editors and Writers, Inc., headquartered at the Missouri School of Journalism, is an association of more than 3,000 business journalists in North America. The organization formed in 1964 to promote superior coverage of business and economic events and issues.
