The Boston Globe Starts Weekly Education Column

Posted on October 27, 2000

The Boston Globe has announced that it will begin a new weekly column on education in its Sunday Globe, beginning this Sunday, October 29. The Chalkboard, written by Laura Pappano, will focus on important issues that span kindergarten through 12th grade.

The column will feature interviews with teachers, students, parents, principals and other educators, as they deal with the subjects and concerns that affect our young children every day - in and out of the classroom. The Chalkboard will appear in the Sunday's Globe City & Region section.

Pappano is a journalist and visiting scholar at Northeastern University. A graduate of Yale, she is the author of a forthcoming book, The Connection Gap: Why Americans Feel So Alone. She has been a frequent contributor to the Globe and the Globe Sunday Magazine, writing on such issues as overscheduled children, gender equity in education, the simplicity movement, and the work-leisure divide. She is married and has three children.

The Globe's K-12 education reporting team also includes full-time staff: Anand Vaishnav, who covers Boston Public Schools; Sandy Coleman, reporting on news and features across the state; and Scott Greenberger, covering statewide education, including the state Department of Education. Supervising coverage of education K-12 is Marilyn Garateix, assistant metro editor.
