The Boston Globe's On Call Magazine Debuts

Posted on March 27, 1998

The Boston Globe announced that the first issue of its new magazine, On Call, a publication directed to the nursing and allied health care professions, has exceeded expectations in page count and advertising. On Call Publisher David D. Dickerson said the magazine's first issue totaled 44 pages, nearly double initial projections. Dickerson is president of Globe Specialty Products (GSP), a Globe subsidiary that is producing the magazine.

"We're delighted at the reception of On Call by the health Care professions," said Dickerson. "We felt we had a good product to offer when we began, and our first issue bears that out. If the March issue is any indication, we're going to have a publication that will be an asset to the health care professions in both advertising and editorial content."

Feature subjects in the first issue include, "Working together for kids," a story about a partnership program at South Shore Hospital that helps school nurses in 42 South Shore towns; "Could research be in your future?," an article about research for nurses thinking of a new career direction; and "Surfing for Credit," how to earn continuing education units at home. The issue also contains several departments -- noteworthy items, a guest editorial, professional outlook, and an interview with a local nurse who switched from the operating room to research.

On Call is a monthly, full-color, 8 1/2 x 11, glossy publication with an initial circulation of 80,000 distributed in three zones in eastern Massachusetts: North/Northwest to the New Hampshire border, West beyond Worcester county, and South to the Rhode Island border. It is being delivered by direct mail and with selected home-delivery subscriptions of The Boston Globe newspaper to nurses, nurse practitioners, occupational and physical therapists, and related health professionals.
