Thomson Learning Acquires ARCO Line From IDG Books

Posted on June 9, 2000

Thomson Learning and IDG Books Worldwide, Inc., have announced that Peterson's, a division of Thomson Learning, has acquired the ARCO brand of test preparation books from IDG Books.

The acquisition brings to Thomson Learning a publishing program targeted to the consumer education trade in the professional, academic, certification and reference categories. ARCO books are best known for their 60-year history of SAT test prep titles, along with civil service and military test prep, professional certification, academic planning, career planning and work skills and individual study guides on assorted topics.

``Our Macmillan General Reference (MGR) acquisition last August included ARCO, that was run as an independent imprint within MGR,'' said John Kilcullen, IDGB Chairman and CEO. ``While ARCO is well-respected in the industry, we already own a portfolio of many successful brands in the test preparation and certification area under the popular For Dummies, Unofficial, and 3-D branded series. Therefore it was decided that we divest ourselves of this brand.''
