Turner Broadcasting Names New Women's Cable Network

Posted on July 19, 1999

The recently announced cable television network teaming Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., Time Inc. and Advance Publications Inc. has been named The Women's Network, it was announced over the weekend by Pat Mitchell, president of CNN Productions and Time Inc. Television, who will helm the new television service as its president and CEO. The announcement was made at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, California. The Women's Network and companion website will launch in early 2000.

"Three principles guided our selection of a name for our new network: Simplicity, inclusiveness and tradition," said Mitchell. "The name we chose had to be universally recognizable; it had to be broad enough to communicate the spectrum of programming we will present; and it had to reflect Turner Broadcasting's more than 25 years of experience creating and launching television networks. 'The Women's Network' leaves no doubt who our new service targets, as well as the wealth of information women will find there."
