Unemployment Related Search Terms Spiked in December

Posted on February 28, 2009

The Wall Street Journal reports that searches using the word "unemployemnt" triped in December 2008 when compared to December 2007. Searches for "unemployment benefits" and "bankruptcy" also soared.

The research also found that search terms like "coupons" and "discounts" are on the rise. During a time period when people are worried about jobs or out-of-work trying to save money makes good sense.

If they tested words like "depression" and possibly even "divorce" they may have found an increase in these types of words as well. One would also expect job search related terms to be on the rise during a time period like this.
